Sr-89 is an important treatment for cancer bone metastasis pain. Metastatic bone lesions are zones of high bone mineral turnover, and there is a constant need of calcium supply for the development of the malignancy.

Strontium chloride 89 is a divalent ion, similar to calcium, therefore it is taken up by sites of active osteogenesis. This relieves bone metastatic-driven pain without generating important side effects and it also presents a very little radioprotection concern.

Suggested dosage per injection: 111MBq (3mCi) – 148MBq (4mCi) each time. Overweight or underweight patient’s dosage can be calculated in accordance with the ratio 1.5BBq-2MBq per 1 kg.

The isotope Sr-89 is produces with the reaction with stable isotope Sr-88, which captures
neutron to form the radioactive isotope strontium-89. Sr-89 undergo β -decay to yttrium-89.
